NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has grown into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association of thousands that includes state organizations, local affiliates and volunteers who raise awareness and provide advocacy, education and support in communities across the United States.
NAMI Okaloosa Walton (aka NAMI Emerald Coast)  is a nonprofit organization affiliated with NAMI Florida and NAMI National. The Emerald Coast affiliate seeks to provide support to the families and friends of the mentally ill; to promote the education of its members and the community about mental illness; to advocate for the rights of, and better services for, the mentally ill; and to foster research to find the causes and a cure for mental illness.

Our Mission & Purpose

NAMI OW is an organization dedicated to providing support, advocacy and education for persons with mental illness and their families. We advocate for better quality care, rights and interests of citizens with mental illness and promotes programs and resources directed to medical research, housing, social and vocational rehabilitation and employment.  Elimination of the stigmatization attached to mental illness is essential to achieving these goals. Mental illness should not be an obstacle to a full and meaningful life.

What We Do

Picture
We advocate.
NAMI serves as an advocate for those who live with a mental illness by bringing their problems to the attention of local, state and federal government and by pressing for supervised residential facilities and good community support systems. NAMI works for the inclusion of families in the care and treatment of the mentally ill. We look for ways to bring families and providers closer together by sharing insights and techniques.

We lead.
Public awareness events and activities, including Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), NAMI Emerald Coast Walks and other efforts, successfully combat stigma and encourage understanding. NAMI works with reporters to make sure our country understands how important mental health is.
Have you been infected by stigma?

There’s a virus spreading across America. It harms the 1 in 5 Americans affected by mental health conditions. It shames them into silence. It prevents them from seeking help. And in some cases, it takes lives. What virus are we talking about? It’s stigma. Stigma against people with mental health conditions. But there’s good news. Stigma is 100% curable. Compassion, empathy and understanding are the antidote. Your voice can spread the cure. Join NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Together we can #CureStigma.
