The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Okaloosa & Walton Counties is a nonprofit organization affiliated with NAMI Florida and NAMI National. The Emerald Coast affiliate seeks to provide support to the families and friends of the mentally ill; to promote the education of its members and the community about mental illness; to advocate for the rights of, and better services for, the mentally ill; and to foster research to find the causes and a cure for mental illness. Elimination of the stigmatization attached to mental illness is essential to achieving these goals. Mental illness should not be an obstacle to a full and meaningful life.
A special message about mental health from one of our Board of Directors, Dr. Janice Hudson:
“Our society attaches a stigma to mental illness that is not attached to physical ailments. Society often views mental illness as weakness rather than as illness. As a physician, I diagnose and treat high blood pressure, allergies, upper respiratory viruses and mental illnesses like depression. Many people refuse treatment and medications for mental illness because mental illness is stigmatized. These same people may take medications for high blood pressure, allergies and ibuprofen because these medications are for physical illnesses. We need to understand that we cannot separate our health into neat boxes and recognize the impact of mental health on our citizens. NAMI offers support for both patients and their families to cope with the impact of mental illness on individuals and families. I encourage anyone impacted by mental illness to seek medical care as well as support.”
